The innovative and environmentally conscious Kroger Our Brands recycling program was developed in collaboration with the international recycling market leader TerraCycle and encourages customers to send flexible plastic packaging for our brands, including potato chip and snack bags, grated cheese bags, freezer bags, bags and deli and cheese bags, Sacks of grain and beans and flexible plastic pet food packages. The growing list of eligible products can be viewed at Kroger.com.

“Kroger continues to offer new and innovative solutions for recycling product packaging as part of our bold vision of Zero Hunger | Zero Waste,” he said Stuart Aitken, Krogers chief merchant and marketing officer. “The Kroger Our Brands Recycling Program gives customers an easy way to enjoy their favorite foods and support recycling in flexible plastic packaging. Our industry-leading program promotes Kroger’s commitment to more sustainable packaging and complements other efforts to build a stronger recycling infrastructure in the US.”

“Flexible plastic packaging for consumer products, including multilayer films, helps maintain food quality and freshness, but is more difficult to recycle and is not accepted in curb programs,” he said Keith Dailey, Krogers Group Vice President Corporate Affairs and Chief Sustainability Officer. “Kroger recognizes the negative impact that packaging – including plastic waste – has on the environment. That is why we continue to focus on innovative solutions for the reuse and recycling of packaging materials.”

How the Kroger program for recycling our brands with TerraCycle works

  1. Register for the program at http://www.Terracycle.com/Kroger.
  2. Collect flexible plastic packaging (bags, pouches, liners and wraps) from Kroger’s exclusive Our Brands, including Simple Truth®, Private Selection®, Kroger® Brand, Comforts®, Luvsome®, Abound® and more in every available box.
  3. When your collection box is full, send our branded packaging to TerraCycle with the free prepaid shipping label available in your account on the program page.
  4. Earn points for every pound of eligible packaging and redeem points as donations to participating charities.

The Kroger Our Brands recycling program is open to any interested person, school, office or community organization. Upon receipt, the collected packaging is cleaned and melted into hard plastic that can be remodeled into new recycled products.

“After seeing great success and enthusiasm for the Simple Truth Recycling program, Kroger is taking his recycling initiative to the next level with a solution for flexible plastic packaging for all exclusive brands,” said the CEO and founder of TerraCycle. Tom Szaky. “Consumers participating in the program can now enjoy more of their favorite foods while minimizing their environmental impact.”

“Our customers’ response to the Simple Truth Recycling program is testament to the real impact and growing consumer demand for more responsible packaging and easy recycling options,” he said Ben Melillo, Krogers Senior Brand Manager. “Through the Kroger Our Brands Recycling Program, we continue to be committed to doing our part and helping customers reduce their environmental footprint in an easy and rewarding way.”

Kroger’s in-store recycling program for plastic films
In a separate but complementary program to enable even more recycling, Kroger continues to offer its customers the option of bringing certain types of plastic films into the store for recycling through various partners. Customers can dispense disposable plastic grocery bags, dry cleaning bags, newspaper sleeves, grocery bags, bread bags, plastic cereal boxes, multi-pack wrappers, and more. Selected items eligible for the Kroger Our Brands recycling program should not be returned to the in-store bins. For more information on both recycling options, please visit Kroger.com.
